The 3 Quickest Ways to Fight Hot Spots
Those painful red and humid patches, better known as hot spots, are one of your dog’s worst nightmares. The itchiness can drive your pup crazy and your fight to pickup what is left behind is even worse.
Here are the 3 quickest ways we have found out to be the most effective when treating hot spots:
- Clear the area of hair immediately.
Hot spots demand you aerate the skin. For this, cut all the hair both on top (if any) and around the area using shears or clippers. Be careful - the skin will sometimes be almost raw and just by touching your dog may react violently (it is painful!).
- Choose the right shampoo.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to bathe your dog’s entire body more often since the idea is to keep their skin dry. But you will need to at least select a shampoo designed to treat hot spots when giving your dog a bath. Always go with a natural or soap-free formula. Organic is best since it does not contain any harsh chemicals that may cause pain and unnecessary irritation. Tea tree and eucalyptus-based shampoos are great to get rid of hot spots in a short timeframe.
- Keep the area clean.
The most important thing is to maintain the skin clear of any debris and hair. Here is a tip: Applying some triple antibiotic twice a day works wonders.
